I’m not picky with my Who, I just love the show and most of its aspects, so I guess I don’t understand what people don’t like. D: I don’t resent you guys’ opinions or anything, I am just confused. *shrug* I’m just interested to see the reasons why you hate Moffat, if you do. *scientific girl is scientific and likes to poll and gather data*
I find him horribly sexist. I wish I didn’t, because I love Eleven as a Doctor, but there you go. Apart from him saying sexist things in interviews and stuff, it shines through in his writing and spoils his episodes for me big time, along with, y’know, making me die a bit inside.
For example, I’m deeply uncomfortable with how both of his Female Characters say life is worthless without their Men (River in her recent speech, Amy in the Dream Lord episode). It’s not really presented as woah-that-is-unhealthy, but more this-is-a-very-moving-love-story for River and well-now-she-has-sorted-out-her-Doctor-vs-Rory-priorities for Amy. I don’t mean that characters like that shouldn’t exist, but they shouldn’t be presented as reasonable attitudes.
Another example is the Children in Need special: if you want the Rory/Amy/glass-floor joke, it should be “Oh Rory! Try and not get so ‘distracted’ in future, eh? ;)” not “Oh Amy! Better make sure no one sees up your skirt and is helplessly distracted again, eh? *implicationcough* Amy it’s your fault how people react to finding you sexy and it’s your responsibility to pre-emptively manage these reactions *implicationcough* ;)”. It takes all responsibility for Rory’s actions away from him, and places them on Amy for ‘causing’ them: well obviously it’s her fault that Rory was distracted, she should really wear trousers in future ha ha ha. It springs from the same place as “short skirt = OMG SHE IS JUST ASKING FOR IT!!1”, which is hateful and dangerous and not the kind of thing I like to find in my Saturday-evening viewing.
I know these are just a couple of examples, but they’re kinda crystalised cases of an attitude that feels like it’s everywhere in his episodes.
In conclusion: everything’s sexist, but Moffat’s writing is a bridge too far, and actually makes me uncomfortable with the things it constantly implies and the rules it assumes to be true. While I was writing my reply I found this post, which says lot of things about River that illustrate the reasons for my Moffat!hate.
I was going to type this into the Reply box of your post, but then it got far too long. Oops. >_>
Long is okay! I like long paragraphs. X3
Thanks for clarifying, I see what you mean. Those are things I’ve noticed too, although I don’t hate Moffat specifically for it. It’s because that while he writes and says sexist things, he is not the only one in DW who portrays female characters in such a way. I don’t like that aspect of what he does, but I like his story writing otherwise. Just like there are some things RTD did that I didn’t like (i.e., I thought Voyage of the Damned was way overdramatic), but I still like his writing in general anyway.
RTD has aspects of sexism also. I really, really hated the way Rose was written in Series 2. I love Rose, and I like her and the Doctor together. However - RTD made it seem like Rose was worthless without her Doctor as well (similar to what you bring up with Amy and River having less worth without their men). Doomsday, while it still made me cry like everyone else…I really had an issue with how it ended, and then Rose’s subsequent ending in Journey’s End. I understand that being pulled away so quickly from someone you love would be traumatizing. But the whole “this is the day I died” and how “worthless” her life became without him bothered me. And it also bothered me that she needed to be stuck with a clone Doctor in order to be truly happy (the whole “not worth as much without a man” thing). Rose was a strong character, and I really hate that she got that ending, because it demeans her value by saying she can’t be happy without the Doctor.
And sexism in Who has been a general problem throughout the years; it’s not just limited to Moffat. Where do you think the archetype of the screechy, “Doctor, save meeeeee!” female companion came from? Some companions initially were based on stereotypes, and treated as such (Victoria is one of those, as is Peri. And I honestly only think Peri was there for the fanservice, which is sexist in itself. Watch Planet of Fire, and there are pointless boob and crotch shots for no reason). And while there are indeed strong female characters (Zoe, Nyssa, Tegan, Ace, Donna, etc. And not saying that Rose, River, or Amy are not strong either. They are, they are just written badly in a few aspects), sexism is not only perpetuated by the Moff. So if that’s one’s only reason for hating him, I’d take a look at Who again. And if you’re hating based on sexism only, there’s a lot more than just Moffat (although I am not saying the sexist things he writes and says are acceptable, obviously).
So I guess my point is that while I agree with you about Moffat, I guess I don’t think that that should be one’s only reason for hating him. I still love Doctor Who in general. I loved it when I started, I love Classic Who, I love it now. There are aspects I dislike, yes, but I don’t let it ruin the whole show for me. If there are other reasons for Moffat-hating besides the sexism, I’d like to hear them as well (leave them in my ask if you guys see this, yes? I’m really legitimately interested). I’m simply curious and want to understand this better, since I’m one of those people who isn’t easily bothered and it takes a lot for me to completely hate or be very upset about something.
(and also if I sound confrontational, I don’t mean to be. I enjoy debating, and I come off as angry sometimes, but I’m not. I like you rather a lot and I respect your opinion. :3 I just love civil debates like this, and backing up my reasoning, and trying to get a point across.)
Edit: and this is aimed at people who hate Moffat in general, not just reajeasa. Just saying my opinion about things. :3
I don’t think you can excuse someone sexist behaviour just because someone else is also sexist. Yes, JNT had a lot of faults with the whole “something for the dads” element of things, that’s not acceptable. The fact that Mel was a computer programmer, and presumably both very intelligent and driven, yet spent all her time screaming and being confused, does not mean that you get a free pass to say slut-shaming things in the show.
I’m not excusing it, not in the least. It bothers me, and I don’t like that he does it. But I’m just saying that if this is the only reason one hates Moffat, it doesn’t make much sense to me, because by proxy, one should dislike the other writers who did sexist things as well. I say this because I see a lot of people who hate Moffat, but they don’t say why, they just go “ARGH I HATE MOFFAT.” So the point of the original post was to ask why people do. Sexism is one of the reason, obviously, and I do not like the sexist things he does and says. But it didn’t make sense to me to have these people I see hating Moffat, but loving RTD; if sexism is the only reason, then it seems a bit contradictory (see my points made about Rose). So that’s why I asked people if there were other reasons as well besides the sexism. The point of illustrating the pattern of sexism in Who was me trying to make sense of things, and speak about just one case of why people hate Moffat. I haven’t heard any other reasons than sexism thus far, so. I’m not excusing sexism in any form; I am vehemently opposed to it.
True, and yes RTD had a lot of issues (I find his fat-phobia far more evident, particularly in Voyage of the Damned). I wouldn’t describe myself as hating Moffat, and his scripts are clearly well made, but I’m just so bitterly disappointed.

OH MY GOD IMAGINE IF THE DOCTOR REGENERATED AS A CAT AND HE COULD BE CALLED DOCTOR MEW AND HE WOULD TRAVEL AROUND IN A TARDIS MONEYBOX AND GET STUCK IN TREES AND THE FIREBRIGADE WOULD COME TO RESCUE HIM AND HE’D BE ALL LIKE ‘I’M THE DOCTOR I DON’T NEED RESCUING’ AND JUMP DOWN AT THE LAST MINUTE AND HE PROBABLY WOULD ACTUALLY LIKE FISH-FINGERS AND CUSTARD AND AMY POND COULD BE LIKE A DUCK OR SOMETHING, I DON’T KNOW, AND THEY’D BUMP INTO RIVER AND SHE’D BE ALL LIKE OH DOCTOR AT LAST, THIS IS HOW I KNEW YOU AND TAKE HIM HOME AND GIVE HIM A BOWL OF MILK THE END.
Caitlin, have I told you recently that you’re the most wonderful person who ever lived?

WELL DUH

I’m all set to start with the first bunch of 1st Doctor adventures.
I have in my possession:
- 001 - An Unearthly Child
- 002 - The Daleks
- 003 - The Edge of Destruction
- 005 - The Keys of Marinus
- 006 - The Aztecs
- 010 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth
As anyone who considers themself a Whovian already knows, it can be difficult to find every episode from the earliest seasons of DW. Some episodes are only available as audio tracks, while others are not attainable at all. I’ll start with what I can purchase online, then fill in the gaps if and when missing episodes become available.
Time to get started! Allons-y!
I tried this once, audios of missing adventures and all. I only got as far as Inferno. Good luck!
Honestly.
I’ve not read one.
After the Comic Relief Special, it would be nice if there was an episode that wasn’t slut-shaming.
I took the Comic Relief special to be a dig at people who made a massive deal out of Amy’s skirts.
Moff is the farthest thing from slut-shaming, look at pretty much any quote he’s ever said about human sexuality.
Really?
All Moffat was doing was playing along, saying the same things. And looking at the response online, if he was having a dig at these sections (and I really doubt that), all it’s done is add fuel to the fire.
And I haven’t seen it for a while, but isn’t there an episode of Coupling (the split-screen one) in which Susan moans at men for being childish, then at women for dressing-up to them? They’re in a beauty parlour. It follows the line “you know who’s more rubbish than men? WE are”, which is quite a problematic line for a male writer to write.
Honestly.

So you know the shrouded things that people hav found in DW S5 episodes? Here are some interesting fellows in the Pandorica Alliance. Their masks look an awful lot like the faces of the Silents.
Mmmmhm.
This has nothing to do with Matt Smith’s Wardrobe, but I just spent ALL DAY watching parts of S5 looking for Silent clues, and I’m proud of my ~*discovery~*, so I had to share!
It’s a Hoix. Old monster.
Yup, they’ve been around since Love & Monsters
