Dutch Parliament Passes Ritual Slaughter Ban
Today in Anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim politics…
The Dutch Parliament has passed a bill banning the slaughter of livestock without stunning it first, removing an exemption that has allowed Jews and Muslims to butcher animals according to their centuries-old dietary rules.
If enacted and enforced, religious groups say observant Jews and Muslims would have to import meat from abroad, stop eating it altogether, or leave the Netherlands.
But this law bans the cruel and unnecessary suffering inflicted upon these animals that are, in the UK at least, ONLY legal because these groups were exempt in the first place. Faith should only extend as far as it does not infringe on the wellbeing of anything else, and this seems to be a step in achieving a fully secular democracy (with no religion favoured above another, or none).
