“Raw Dog”: Dan Savage on Asexuality
“With all the minimally sexuals out there making normally sexuals miserable, NSNA, it should be obvious to all regular readers that there’s not exactly a shortage of people who aren’t interested in sex. With that being the case, why would you even contemplate inflicting yourself on a normally sexual person? Why not go find another minimally sexual person? You’ll be doing your minimally sexual self a favor, you’ll be doing your future minimally sexual partner a favor, and you’ll be doing all normally sexual persons everywhere a favor by removing two minimals—you and your future partner—from the dating pool. Unless you’re more interested in sex than you let on, NSNA, and you find the idea of a normally sexual partner appealing because a normal might be able to help you build your confidence and learn to enjoy sex.”
From the column Raw Dog.I mean wow.
Where do I start?
First off… “normals”? Fuck you. So I and every other asexual and demisexual out there are some sort of weird growth or what? Learn that there’s no such thing as “normal” and move the fuck on with your life.
Second, remove yourself from the dating pool? Like I have some sort of anti-right to be there? Because the inconvenience of you and your asshole ways having to learn that there are people who aren’t interested in sex, and that they want to date the right person just as much as you do, is just so mind-numbingly great that we should just move out of your mighty way?
Third, and worst, this is so god damn triggering to me. When people say asexuals don’t face trials, this is the shit I think about. There actually isn’t an abundance of other asexuals, and probably the likelihood of finding a “soulmate” in them is pretty low. So either I face being left alone, or I pray that someone with sexual urges could love me just as much. And GDI, I am so afraid of being left alone because I’m “not good enough” and I “don’t put out.” So it makes me worry that I, my personality, my love, is not as good as sex.
Thankfully, there are a lot of accepting people, and sex and romance are so complicated that you can never predict what will happen. But seriously fuck you Savage. (Also, don’t go disrespecting identities, no matter what you think of them.)
