Doctor Who and Me

I am bored, and so I shall bore you with the history of my Doctor Who fandom.

The first Who I ever saw was the end of The Seeds of Doom 3 in English in Year 4 (?). We had to write how we thought the cliffhanger was resolved, and since I had no idea what the Doctor was like, I wrote him as James Bond (all thumping and ruthless). I did get the jumping through the window right, though.

At some point in early ‘99 (I think), one of the Sky TV channels was doing a dinosaur week, and included in its package Invasion of the Dinosaurs with Jon Pertwee. I saw the last 3 episodes, and remember thinking it was great fun. Mainly, though, I remember my dad chortling as a brachiosaurus ran up to and attacked a T-Rex near the beginning of episode 6.

Later that year, there was a Blue Peter Doctor Who special. I didn’t see it (much as I dislike the term, I can only say that I had grown out of it), but my brother did, and he went and bought Resurrection of the Daleks from MVC (which doesn’t exist anymore, not that anyone else is going to get nostalgic about it) for about £5. We watched it, kind of enjoyed it despite the fact that it’s very dark (with a higher body-count than The Terminator), and pretty soon we’d seen Dr Who and the Daleks (The Cushing movie, good fun, saw it with grandparents), Nightmare of Eden (underrated, funny Tom Baker story) and The Curse of Peladon (complex and dull Pertwee).

My brother and I were both still keen when Spearhead from Space and Doctor Who and the Silurians followed the BBC2 Doctor Who Night, but by the time we got to Christmas, we had polarized. Any mention of Doctor Who would have me like this:

And my brother like this:

With the help of a 2 for 1 offer in MVC (ahhh, MVC), some off-air recordings from my old maths teacher (including some original ones of Trial of a Timelord that were four years older than me) and early morning weekend omnibuses on UKGold, as well as the usual DVD releases, I had seen most stories (or listened to the audios of the missing episodes) by about 2003. In 2010, I watched The Chase and The Krotons thus had seen every story at least once.

And that’s pretty much it.
